Reflections on IIeX, Amsterdam, February 2019

Although being on our stand at Quirks London was a great experience – it's always a pleasure to meet potential customers and partners - IIeX Europe provided a really interesting contrast. It was my first IIeX event and I was very surprised by how different it was from Quirks.
Generally, the talks at IIeX were much more focused on insights than traditional research topics. From attending many presentations, my overwhelming impression is that holy grail for clients is to obtain insights as quickly as possible from customer data, but without much (if any) analysis and intervention. There was a great mix of attendees, including software providers, market research agencies and end-users.
If I had to highlight one session at IIeX, it would be CEO, Ofri Ben-Porat, explaining how the possibility of shifting the training of Artificial Intelligence Models directly to the end-user device could minimise privacy concerns (as no data would be shared within a centralised system),as well as massively scaling our coding potential. In coding terms, this is a very interesting development and one that I will keep a close eye on.
Another important talk was from Coca-Cola and , describing how their Insight platform allows Coca-Cola to uncover insights really quickly. The platform can process questions in Natural Language and derive the answers directly from customer data. Another highlight was who showed how they could analyse trends early on, allowing brands to win key first-mover advantage. The presentation used a case study from Lipton.
Our very own CTO, Tim Brandwood, gave an excellent talk about Codeit’s blended approach to free-text coding, which combines multiple Artificial Intelligence techniques, to maximize efficiency and productivity. Supporting his talk, Tim highlighted a recent project we undertook with . We analysed around 50,000 hotel reviews in just 3 days, which is a massive improvement over the 3 months it would have taken with other legacy tools. The talk was well-received, generating a good number of questions, and leading to interesting discussions with several potential clients.
We also participated in the Meet-the-Startup session, which is part of the IIeX Innovation Competition. We had to try and convince attendees to give us their “dyna-dollars” which would provide an opportunity to be a wild-card in the competition for a €20000 price. Sadly, despite collecting a good sum of dyna-dollars, it wasn’t quite enough for us to move on to the next stage of the competition.
The eventual finalists were , , , , and . I particularly enjoyed the presentation from Q&Me, a Vietnamese chatbot on Facebook Messenger, and Qualify (who won the competition). With user-permission, they use data such as sites visited, apps etc, to improve survey targeting.

My overall impression is that the industry is moving forward really quickly, and thankfully for us, Artificial Intelligence seems to be more and more widely used – it was certainly one of the key topics at the conferences.
